Background of the Study :
Urban migration has significantly reshaped the economic landscape of Nigeria, with Abuja serving as a prime example of rapid urban growth. Since 2000, the influx of migrants from rural areas to Abuja has contributed to both economic dynamism and infrastructural strain. Migrants bring with them diverse skills and entrepreneurial aspirations that can stimulate local economic activities, drive consumer demand, and foster innovation (Ibrahim, 2023). However, urban migration also poses challenges such as housing shortages, increased pressure on public services, and the expansion of informal settlements. Policymakers have introduced various urban planning and infrastructural development initiatives to manage these challenges while harnessing the economic potential of a growing urban population (Adebayo, 2024). This study examines the dual economic impacts of urban migration in Abuja by analyzing its contributions to economic growth and the pressures it places on urban systems. Through the evaluation of migration trends, economic indicators, and policy responses, the research provides a comprehensive picture of how urban migration shapes economic outcomes in Nigeria’s capital (Usman, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
While urban migration in Abuja has the potential to drive economic growth, it has also resulted in significant challenges that impede sustainable development. Rapid population influx has led to inadequate housing, strained public services, and widening socio-economic disparities. The gap between the opportunities created by migration and the capacity of urban infrastructure to support these changes remains a critical concern. This study seeks to investigate the economic impacts of urban migration, focusing on how the benefits of increased labor and entrepreneurial activity are offset by the negative effects of overcrowding and insufficient public investment (Ibrahim, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the economic benefits of urban migration in Abuja.
To identify the challenges posed by rapid urban population growth.
To recommend policy measures for sustainable urban development.
Research Questions:
What are the economic impacts of urban migration in Abuja?
How does urban migration affect infrastructural development and service delivery?
What policies can mitigate the adverse effects of rapid urbanization?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Urban migration contributes positively to economic growth in Abuja.
H2: Inadequate urban planning exacerbates the negative impacts of migration.
H3: Effective policy interventions can balance economic benefits with infrastructural needs.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the complex economic impacts of urban migration in Abuja. The findings will provide crucial insights for policymakers and urban planners on harnessing the benefits of migration while addressing its challenges. By recommending targeted policy measures, the research supports sustainable urban development and improved public service delivery, contributing to a more resilient and inclusive urban economy (Usman, 2025).
